trip planning. this is our route plotted on a topo map which we roughly followed. We started our hike at 5:30am from the Upper Pines Campgrounds. I was carrying two 100 oz. bladders of ice (camelbaks) and four 20 oz. bottles of gatorade, one first aid kit, one pair of gloves, two zone bars, and five powerbars. My trekking poles were secured by bungee to my pack, I also carried a flashlight, a headlamp, a pair of leather gloves for the cables, a canon A70 compact camera, sunscreen, a wallet, a whistle, and sunglasses. i didn't bring a FRS radio, but others on our team did, and i'd highly recommend bringing them for those traveling in groups. for those planning on making the hike in the future, i'd recommend definitely recommend starting before sunrise and carrying at least 1 oz of fluid (gatorade, water, etc.) for every 1 lb of body weight. i consumed 170 oz of water and 40 oz of gatorade over the 12 hour hike. carrying a water filter is a good alternative to carrying all of your water up.
